Welcome Message from Principal Ulmer

June 30, 2020

Hello Royal Families,

I am so honored to be writing this letter to you as the new principal of HSE High School.  Working with talented educators to help students reach their full potential has not been just a job for me, but a true passion.  Some of you may know me from my work with The HSF Academy where we developed individualized learning plans to help students who were at-risk of not graduating be able to complete requirements and obtain a high school diploma.   In that role, I learned the importance of creating connection, the value of quality instruction, the importance of recognizing different learning styles, and the powerful role that our community can play in student success.  As the principal of HSE, I will rely on these lessons as we partner together to create a school environment where all students feel a sense of belonging, are challenged academically, are given the greatest opportunity to succeed, and are prepared for their next steps whatever they may be.  Our school is filled with intelligent, talented, and passionate people who are focused on doing is what is right for kids and I am just so grateful to be a part of this team.

As we look to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, there are two areas of focus for us: (1) The reopening plan for our school, and (2) creating a school environment where all students and staff feel safe and valued.
Covid-19 has changed the way we do school and we are all concerned about what school is going to look like in August.  In order to better prepare for the opening of school, please login to Skyward, and under the Back to School Forms, fill out Returning to School Questionnaire. This form will provide information to us regarding staffing and facility needs. We have a district wide Task Force that has created a draft of our reopening plan and it is now being reviewed by the Fishers Health Department.  After the plan has been reviewed by the Health Department and our Hamilton Southeastern Teachers Association, we should have a finalized plan available for you on Friday, July 10.

Creating an environment where every student, parent, staff member, and administrator feels like they are a part of the team is essential to a positive school culture.  Hamilton Southeastern High School has a well-deserved reputation and is a phenomenal school!  However, there are some students from different socio-economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds who sometimes feel “out of place.”  I see this as an amazing opportunity for all our students, parents, faculty, and staff to listen to each other, learn from each other, and then become a place where cultural proficiency is encouraged and courageous conversations are welcomed. We know that real change begins with awareness, listening, and empathy and these things take time and commitment.  We are committed to doing the right thing for kids so stay tuned as I share the progress of our journey.

I would like to introduce you to my family.  My son, Zachary, and his wife, Maria, live in Lafayette with my grandson, Elliott and dog, Scotland.  Zachary is a chemical engineer with Tate and Lyle, and my daughter-in-law is a first-grade teacher at Klondike Elementary School.  My daughter, Kate, just finished her senior year at Purdue University and is moving to Indianapolis with her dogs, Pepper and Opie.  She has spent the past three years completing an internship with the media department for Purdue Athletics.  We love dogs, Purdue, March Madness, White Sox Baseball (except for Maria who cheers for the north siders), and spending time together!

I want to thank all of you for your kind welcome and I look forward to meeting you soon!  Go Royals!
