College and Career Readiness

Our students are full of big dreams and big potential.

It is our job to help advance, support and plan for their future goals. Regardless of if college, career, military, or entrepreneurship are in your future, all HSE students will be equipped to succeed and evolve in a face-paced, ever-changing global environment.

In high school, students are moving beyond career awareness and information toward career exploration, preparation and planning. The Indiana Roadmap for Student Success articulates some experiences that build career include preparing a graduation plan, obtain work-based learning experiences, estimate the cost of college, search for scholarships, create a resume, completing a graduation plan, participating in a job shadow or interviewing a professional in a career field of interest, creating a resume, creating a financial plan and meeting graduation pathways.

Naviance/ College Applications

Hamilton Southeastern High School is pleased to introduce Naviance, a secure web-based planning and advising system that helps students and parents navigate through high school and explore post high school options. Any student or parent who does not have their Naviance login and password information should contact the HSE Counseling Office at 594-4193.

What can Naviance do?

Determine your student’s personality and career interests. This is called “Do What You Are” through Family Connection
Gain insight into how your student learns to help them achieve their maximum potential. You can access “Learning Style” through your Family Connection. If it proves to be too lengthy and the assessment is done in segments be sure to select the “Finish Later” icon.
Search and match college by specific criteria
Compare Colleges
Display scattergrams and application statistics from HSEHS
Compile college plans
Track applications
Receive emails from the Hamilton Southeastern HS Guidance Office on upcoming college representative visits and other Guidance Office events
Research 12th grade scholarship opportunities

All HSE students receive their login information during their freshman year.

Steps for Applying to College:

Apply early! The Guidance Office needs two weeks to process your applications-so plan your timing with that in mind.

First, complete an on-line application with a college through their web site.

Next, request your transcript and school portion of your application. Go to your account in Naviance.

Under the “Colleges” tab of your account open "Colleges I am Applying To" and add all colleges you are applying to in the area identified as “add to my list”. Be sure to check your request for a transcript and that you have submitted your application. Both boxes are available when you enter your college.
A Secondary School Report (SSR form) will be automatically generated through Naviance for colleges and your counselor will complete this online.
If you need a teacher recommendation you must ask your teacher in person. Once permission has been granted, you may request this through your Naviance Account as well. Be sure your teacher accepts your request to complete a recommendation. This request area is on the same screen in Naviance as “Colleges I Am Applying To”.
You will be able to track the progress on your request through your Naviance Account. If the colleges you applied to require mid-year and/or final reports to be sent, you may request these by coming into the Guidance Office.
If you are using the Common Application, you must register with them and set up an account. This account information must be matched to your Naviance account and the FERPA waiver completed in your Common App account when you are competing your Common App Application. Do not request teacher letters of recommendation in your Common Application.

Finally, send SAT/ACT Scores – Visit the ACT website to send ACT scores. Visit the CollegeBoard website to send SAT scores. These will be reported directly to the universities or colleges you request from the testing companies. Hamilton Southeastern does not report scores to colleges.

College Visits

Students can sign up for all in school college rep visits through Naviance except for Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University, IUPUI, Ball State University, Butler, and the University of Cincinnati. For those six in school college rep visits, students need to sign up through Enriching Students.

Career Readiness

Career planning is an important part of high school. Students should be considering what their strengths are and what types of employment interest them. Hopefully a career can be found at the intersection of interests and strengths.

Job Shadowing: Students can use a “college visit” day to spend exploring a career. Please see counselor for more information.

Below are other useful tools for career inventories and career information:

Naviance - This web site will help determine your student’s personality and career interests. This is called “Do What You Are” through Family Connection. A registration code is needed and will be sent to each 9th grader towards the beginning of the school year. A code can also be retrieved through the guidance office.

Indiana Career Explorer - This state sponsored service is an excellent free source for career assessments. The code you need to enter is N3322684NGP. After registering, start with the Learn About Myself tab to begin career assessments.

Learn More Indiana - This state sponsored web site offers career info and career inventories. It is an excellent resource for all things career!

Bureau of Labor Statistics Career Information Page- This is great page to explore all things career related. It is created specifically for high school students.

ASVAB - This military readiness test is given once a year at HSE by military personnel. Though the test is for military entrance, part of the test is used to help students determine personal aptitude at a particular career.

Union Apprenticeship Programs- This lists all of the various labor programs where paid training can be gained through the unions.
